It has only recently come to my attention that the Bodo Industrial Park insert (Herald, Jan. 26) contains misconceptions about the “Bodo Park Beginnings” that I would like to correct.
My uncle, Archie Bodo, was not a local rancher. He owned and operated Archie Bodo Machine Shop, on Seventh Street between Second and Third avenues, for many years.
The land on which the Bodo Industrial Ranches is located had been part of Ridges Basin Ranch, which was the lifetime accomplishments of Mike Bodo Sr. and his son Mike Bodo Jr.
Upon Mike Jr.’s passing, his heirs purchased the ranch from his estate. The heirs included Mike Jr.’s brothers, Archie and Vernon, and sister Rose. Also Vernon’s sons, Randy and Ron, and daughter Kristen, and Rose’s daughter Joan were heirs to the estate.
Mike Jr. was in the negotiating stage with the Durango Development Foundation prior to his passing. The heirs, collectively, agreed to the purchase to honor his wishes. The park was named for Mike Bodo Jr. in memory of his lifetime dedication to La Plata County, the city of Durango and the cattle industry.
