Cortez man injured in head-on crash at U.S. 160/491 intersection

Collision occurred Sunday night

A 25-year-old Cortez man was in stable condition Monday morning at Southwest Memorial Hospital after suffering broken bones in a head-on crash Sunday night at the intersection of U.S. Highway 160 and U.S. Highway 491.

Cortez Police Department Lt. Andy Brock said Carlton Johnson, 25, of Cortez was transported to the hospital after a head-on crash with a semitrailer at 9:01 p.m. Sunday at the West Y.

Johnson suffered multiple broken bones including broken ribs, Brock said.

The driver of the semitrailer, Noel Elias, 52, of Clovis, New Mexico, was cited for careless driving causing bodily injuries, Brock said.

Elias went through a yellow light on Broadway and hit Johnson’s Kia, Brock said. Johnson was on Main Street and making a turn onto Broadway.

Several other people were mentioned in an unfinished police report concerning the incident, but Brock said he was unsure if the additional people were witnesses or passengers in the vehicles.
