Council expected to delay building fee public hearing

Fair share to be discussed in May
The Durango City Council will likely reschedule a public hearing about fees in lieu of building affordable or attainable housing. The city is taking on the issue because no affordable housing has been built since the ordinance passed in 2008. A SkyTrak telehandler holds building materials aloft at a residential housing construction site in Detroit in November.

A discussion on one of the main affordable housing topics the Durango City Council planned for Tuesday likely will be rescheduled to May 5.

The discussion about adjusting fees that builders pay in lieu of constructing affordable or attainable housing probably will not be discussed this week, said Greg Hoch, director of Community Development.

The Durango City Council must take formal action at the meeting to reschedule the public hearing.

City staff members plan to meet with representatives of the home building community before the next meeting to discuss the Fair Share law, Hoch said.

The staff had decided more time to work on the changes was needed.

The city is reworking the ordinance because of a shortage of affordable housing.

A public hearing about the law that could protect condo builders from lawsuits is still planned for Tuesday evening.
