Council spends money like no tomorrow

It’s time for a change of the City Council members!

This current council is spending our money like there’s no tomorrow! There is a tomorrow, even though it may be shorter for some of us older folks. I can’t believe all the places they are finding to spend our money: the ½-cent sales tax, huge increases in our water and sewer bills (and this is just the beginning – look forward to two more years of increases) and higher taxes for the new/reconditioned airport. Some of us are on fixed incomes and just cannot afford another $40 here and $60 there. I am all for recreation, but there is no need to renew the ½-cent sales tax. There are many grants and awards available for recreation.

The Parks and Recreation Department wants to spend more of its money on a new bike park at Chapman Hill. Great, but perhaps this is a place where we could cut a bit and use that money for maintenance, said to be needed from the sales tax. We work before we play, and our expenses need to be addressed before we spend limited dollars when there are other sources for funding recreation.

Infrastructure is another matter. My water and sewer bill has a 63 percent increase this month! Was this the right way to address the needed sewage-treatment plant issue? Could some of the ½-cent sales tax have been used previously for this instead of raising rates so drastically? Isn’t it important to fix the sewer system before we build more river trail? It will be interesting to see how the airport expansion is handled. Bigger is not always better.

I am voting for Dave McHenry for City Council because he has common sense, is fiscally responsible, conscious of people in all income levels, will listen to me and my concerns instead of making decisions behind closed doors and is sensitive to the fragility of our neighborhoods. Dave is an outstanding choice to work and care for our community.
