County fair wraps up events on Sunday

Keanna Smith of Ignacio checks on Mestari, her grand champion market steer, on Saturday.

It's been eight years of hard work for Keanna Smith of Ignacio, but it resulted in her steer, Mastari, winning the grand champion breeding stock prize at the La Plata County Fair.

"The judge said there are not many cattle put together like him," she said, adding that the 1,256-pound animal is "close to perfect." Mastari was bred by Copeland Show Cattle.

Smith was getting him ready for the livestock auction on Saturday, hoping to get a top price for him to help her continue her college education after graduating from Bayfield High School in 2016.

With her champion going to auction, she can't take him to the Colorado State Fair, but she is taking some lambs to the state competition, she added.

First, there will be a few tears shed as she loads Mastari on Sunday. She said her whole family loves this steer, but selling him is part of county fair competition.

The La Plata County Fair concludes on Sunday, with the Catch-it Contest starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Fairgrounds. Exhibits and animals will be released starting at 2 p.m.

The carnival and midway remain open Sunday afternoon and evening.
