County must address insurers’ coverage concerns

Regarding “Officials adopt wildfire rules” (Herald, March 25): Why did county government not thoroughly seek to understand and explicitly address the concerns of insurance agencies, so that homeowners can be assured we will not lose our coverage?

Commissioners were concerned about this, but nothing apparently was done. Community development staff members cannot “speak” for the insurance industry, as the story noted – but we expect them to speak with it, explain those concerns to homeowners and figure out how to change policy to alleviate insurance-agency concerns.

If county government does not do this, many of us outside Durango could suffer serious loss of home insurance. We are talking about thousands of existing homes. This is a very big issue.

Please remedy this quickly. Ensure that all insurance-agency concerns have been heard, publicized and addressed in policy. We would then want to hear from the insurance agencies themselves that they are content with the regulations and will not drop homeowner coverage if these are followed.

This appears to be a severe wildfire year. Homeowner action is needed right away.
