County surveyor looks forward

Connolly

La Plata County Surveyor Larry Connolly is unopposed in the general election, a fact he’s completely fine with. After all, it’s a nonpartisan position, he said.

“As a surveyor, we are suppose to be totally objective,” he said.

Connolly, a Democrat, has spent the last 14 years as the county surveyor and 20 running his private business, Animas Surveying and Mapping.

The county surveyor has tree basic duties:

To represent the county in boundary disputes.

To notify the county attorney of any unsettled boundary dispute or boundary discrepancies within the county that may come to his or her attention.

To properly file surveys, field notes, calculations, maps and any other records involving work authorized and financed by county commissioners.

Connolly has served as a surveyor representative for the County Elected Officials Salary Commission to the governor, helped start the Four Corners Area Surveying Seminar Committee and served as the director of the Professional Land Surveyors of Colorado.

Additionally, when the time comes for the La Plata County Planning Department to revise land-use codes for various subdivisions and other projects, he hopes to be involved and provide his surveying services for insight about department requirements.

“I try my best to break surveying terms down to layman’s terms, and hopefully guide people in the right direction,” he said.
