CPW offers bearproofing advice

Bearproof your property and cars to help keep your neighbors and Colorado’s bears safe this summer.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds the public that it is crucial to bearproof your property and cars when living in or traveling to bear country this summer.

Properly bearproofing your home includes:

Closing and locking all bear-accessible windows and doors, including garages, when not at home and at night.Installing sturdy grates or bars on windows if they must be left open.Keeping car doors and windows closed and locked if a vehicle is parked outside. Removing anything with an odor. Installing extra-sturdy doors when attractants are stored in garages.Removing any tree limbs that might provide access to upper-level decks and windows.Replacing exterior lever-style door handles with good quality round doorknobs bears can’t pull or push open.Using electric fencing, unwelcome mats and scent deterrents.Don’t leave trash, food or odorous items out overnight, including unlocked garages, sheds or decks, unless in a bear-proof enclosure or container. Only feed birds when bears are hibernating. If a bear comes close to your home, scare it away with loud noises.If a bear enters your home, open doors and windows. Never approach a bear or block escape routes.If a bear won’t leave the area, call CPW at 247-0855.
