Crash briefly closes U.S. 550

Teenager cited for careless driving

A two-vehicle crash early Monday on U.S. Highway 550 at Hermosa Road in the Animas Valley north of Durango caused minor injuries and a citation for careless driving.

The crash involved a 1999 Honda CR-V and a 2013 Ford Fusion.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Chris Balenti said the accident, which happened at 7:30 a.m., occurred this way:

The CR-V, driven by a 16-year-old girl, was stopped on Hermosa Road to make a left turn onto U.S. Highway 550. A turning school bus obscured her vision, but she pulled out, striking the right-front of the CR-V, which was northbound on Highway 550.

The teen was cited for careless driving resulting in bodily injury, Balenti said.

Only minor injuries resulted, Balenti said. No one was transported for medical attention.

Traffic in both north and south lanes was diverted temporarily, but the highway reopened to two-way traffic at 8:30 a.m.
