Crash closes lane on U.S. Highway 550 south of Durango

Station wagon and tractor-trailer collided around 5 p.m.

An Audi station wagon and a tractor-trailer collided Thursday evening south of Durango, closing one side of U.S. Highway 550 near mile marker 9.4 for about 30 minutes, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The tractor-trailer, which was traveling northbound, and the Audi, which was traveling southbound, side-swiped just before 5 p.m., causing severe damage to the station wagon, said State Trooper Jeff Chmielewski.

The driver of the Audi, a man who police did not publicly identify, was in “relatively stable condition” as he was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center, Chmielewski said. The condition of the driver of the tractor-trailer was not immediately available, he said.

Police do not suspect alcohol or texting and driving were factors in the crash; other potential causes are being investigated, Chmielewski said.

The highway was reduced to one lane of alternating traffic for at least 30 minutes.

State troopers are also investigating who is at fault, he said.
