Trying to walk on Camino del Rio, as any local knows, is a cross between walking a tightrope with grease and death. It is dangerous. There has been speculation on ways to make Camino del Rio safer for pedestrians. The problem is too much traffic going down one corridor. There are no other main routes from south Durango to north Durango.
There is an easy solution. Take the Bridge to Nowhere and connect it through Ewing Mesa with a bypass to the northern side and have access points come out near the college and one out by Florida Road to 32nd Street.
I know the planners hate the words Bridge to Nowhere, but let’s be honest, that is what it is. It will finally be the bridge to somewhere. Trying to say that it is no longer a bridge to nowhere by connecting it to Mercy is a stretch.
That way, all traffic wanting to just get through Durango to go north or south can, with no traffic lights, and that will take a lot of traffic off Camino del Rio. Also, the planners should love this since they won’t call it the Bridge to Nowhere anymore. Finally connecting that bridge to the new route to Farmington will make it a throughway from south to north without any traffic lights.
