The names at the top of the varsity girls' result sheet - 5A Farmington's McKinzey Allee and Anastasia Wilkinson and Pagosa Springs' Olivia Reinhardt - last Saturday weren't much of a surprise.
But in joining them in the race's top 10, Bayfield's Lexa Fleming raised some eyebrows.
The senior clocked a 23:57.4 on the Montezuma County Fairgrounds course to place ninth at the 2015 Montezuma-Cortez Ancient Trails Invitational, and register one of BHS cross country's best efforts yet this autumn. Junior Rachel Cooper wasn't far behind either, posting a 13th-place 24:28.4 in strong support. The sisters Sanders, Jade (35:04.6) and Mylee (35:29.9), finished 55th and 56th to round out the squad.
Allee won the 5K race in 20:39.5, well ahead of Reinhardt (22:29.2) and Wilkinson (23:07.4), with 4A Durango freshmen Becca Moenning (23:08.5) and Anna Smagacz (23:12.6) finishing up in the top five.
DHS senior Nicholas Turco was the runaway winner in the boys' main, recording a 17:24.7 on the route. The closest Wolverine to him was 18th-place sophomore Sloan Mazur in 20:05.5. Bryan Gram came in next with a 28th-place 20:59.1, and Brandon Stuever was 41st in an even 22:03.
Jackson Sibley became Bayfield's No. 4 at the event with his 50th-place 23:43.7, and Daniel Jenkins (60th, 25:22.5) completed the team's quintet. The Ancient Trails' top five, meanwhile, also counted second-place Devin Howe (17:57.7) of Teec Nos Pos, Ariz., DHS' William Chandler (18:01.7), Alex Yellowhair of Teec Nos Pos (18:04.6) and FHS' Danny Hickman (18:09.9).
After a well-earned week off to rest and fine-tune, the harriers will hit the postseason running on Friday, Oct. 23, at the Class 3A-Region I championships in Pagosa Springs.
The top five teams-each scoring its best five-and all other individuals who place in the top 15 will reserve a spot at the 2015 CHSAA State championships.
