CrossFit Catacombs plans to move to Model Tire building in Durango

Design Review Board to vote on minor building changes
Crossfit Catacombs plans to buy the Model Tire store building and move into the space in August. Much of the building’s exterior, including the mural, will remain.

CrossFit Catacombs plans to move into the longtime home of the Model Tire Store at 1162 Main Ave.

The gym has outgrown the space that it leases on East Eighth Avenue, and owners Tom and Tracie Holcomb expect the new location will be more central for their clients, Tracie Holcomb said.

The couple is proposing some minor changes to the building that the Design Review Board will likely vote on during Wednesday’s meeting. The two plan to replace the garage doors that face Main Avenue with glass doors. On the north-facing wall, they plan to put a similar glass garage door and pedestrian door for accessibility. The glass doors are intended to provide natural lighting for the gym.

Much of the building’s exterior, including the historic Model Tire sign on the north wall, will remain in place, she said. “One of the things we really liked about the building was the historic character,” she said.

The building has been home to Model Tire since 1925, and in the 1930s, Pete Bukovec bought it, and it has been run by the same family ever since.

The Holcombs are buying the building from Bukovec’s daughter-in-law, Edith Bukovec.

“We have been really humbled and honored that she’s allowing us that opportunity ... We are going to try really hard to honor the legacy of what that family has done there over the years,” Holcomb said.

CrossFit classes are planned to take place in the back of the building, and the front section of the building will be turned into office space.

Eventually, the Holcombs would like to replace the building’s facade to look like the original, but that will have to be at a later stage, she said.

Also on Wednesday, the Design Review Board will give developers feedback on plans for a building that will fill four lots on the west side of the 1100 block of Main Avenue. The board will provide guidance to the developer but it will not vote on the project, according to city documents.

The building would replace two buildings that house X-Rock 105.3 FM and FastSigns and a building on Narrow Gauge Avenue. It would also fill a parking lot.

Early designs show the proposed building would be four stories tall and would house commercial and residential space, according to city documents. The top two stories would be stepped back so that building does not appear as tall, and an underground parking garage is planned as part of the project. The project is in the conceptual stage and a timeline for development has not been set, said Joel Aguilar, owner of Jita Contracting.

The Design Review Board will meet at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Durango City Hall.
