As the city tries to decide whether to upgrade the existing water-treatment plant or to invest in a new plant, Cundiff Park must be included in the equation.
Cundiff Park is close to the existing plant and would require little additional conduit and likely no additional pumping. For little more than the cost of an upgrade to the existing plant, the city could build a completely new, modern facility – one designed to accept future upgrades as the need arises, far into the future. The city has the ability now to move the current eyesore from our largest park, Santa Rita, away from our new whitewater facility to a location where it wouldn’t be the first thing visitors encounter on arriving in Durango.
Cundiff Park is the most cost-effective option, must be evaluated in an open and transparent manner and must not to be dismissed out-of-hand for reasons that are not explained to voters – who will be likely asked in the future to approve a bond issue in order to pay for the plant and who are currently closely evaluating candidates now vying for city office.
