Durango High School wrestling coach John Gurule was much more pleased Saturday night than he was Friday in Delta.
After losing a dual meet 64-7 against Delta High School, the Demons competed in Delta’s tournament and had five of their eight wrestlers place.
Senior Patrick Cunnion led the way for the Demons at 182 pounds, finishing first and winning his championship match via technical fall.
“I was hoping he would get an outstanding wrestler award, but he didn’t,” Gurule said. “But he tech-falled his kid in the final, so he had an outstanding day.”
Hunter Hall earned a third-place finish at 126 pounds, and Richard Hall took fifth at 195 pounds for DHS.
Placing sixth was David Etz (220) and Cameron Jacobs (106).
“I’m happy with the corrections we made from Friday night to Saturday,” Gurule said. “We wrestled like we know how to. We know we will have a bad night here and there, and as long as we come back and improve, that’s all that matters.”
DHS will face one of its toughest challenges of the season next weekend at the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction.
