Cutting teachers, clubs affects families

Trujillo

Have you ever wondered if Durango School District 9-R would run out of money? In this situation, my opinion is that we should increase the mill levy for schools. My reasoning for this is so we don’t have bigger class sizes, so we don’t lose fun clubs or programs and so we don’t lose good teachers.

To begin, I think we should raise the school mill levy because I don’t want to have a bigger class size. This is because if there were more kids in a class, I would have less individualized learning. Plus, some kids have reading groups to help them read better and some kids have writing groups to help them with writing. Maybe if those teachers get cut, those kids would be lost with reading or writing.

Furthermore, the next reason that I want to increase the mill levy is because I don’t want to lose fun programs such as Kids Camp, after school art, tech club, drama club, yearbook club, sport clubs like basketball, football or soccer and way more!

I wouldn’t want to lose Kids Camp because my mom or dad can’t always be coming to pick me up then go to my sister’s school and pick her up. That’s why I go to Kids Camp and my sister rides the bus! But, if Kids Camp gets cut, maybe one of my parents would get laid off for missing so much work. I also can’t ride the bus because it doesn’t go all the way out to my house.

Some kids only keep their grades up to get into sport clubs too, and if those get cut then those kids will get bad grades and maybe even be drop-outs.

The last reason I want to mill levy is I don’t want to lose teachers like Mr. Domas, Coach Scott, Mrs. Willis and Mr. Curmano. The reason I don’t want to lose any teachers is the same reason as what I said in the first paragraph: There would be bigger class sizes and less individualized learning for some students. I also wouldn’t want to lose any bus drivers because we would have less transportation. Some kids who ride the bus might have to have their parents pick them up and that might be hard for their parents.

All in all, I think that Durango School District 9-R should ask voters to increase the mill levy in this situation. I hope you agree with me! If you don’t, I respect that because it’s your opinion.
