A loaded field of local professional and collegiate bike racers converged on Ray Dennison Memorial Field on the Fort Lewis College campus on Saturday afternoon for a day of cyclocross racing.
The SquawkerCX.1 race featured a tough course for riders and a great event for spectators on a beautiful afternoon in Durango. After a thrilling morning of kids races, the open races gave fans a show.
In the open women’s race, Durango’s Sarah Sturm, a pro cyclocross racer for Specialized, claimed yet another win on the 4 Corners Cyclocross series scheduled, as she edged fellow Durangoans Ellen Campbell, of FLC, and Katja Freeburn. Earlier this month, Sturm finished 11th overall at the Pan-American Games in Canada. Campbell is racing cyclocross coming on the heels of her effort to help the Skyhawks win the collegiate mountain biking national championship.
The men’s race featured a loaded field of local pros with the mountain bikers enjoying their offseason. Olympian and four-time defending mountain bike national champion Howard Grotts led much of the race despite racing on a mountain bike instead of a cross bike. He went on to finish fifth overall, while Durangoan Stephan Davoust went on to claim a victory.
Davoust edged Rotem Ishay and Benajamin Sonntag, who finished second and third, respectively. Fourth in the race was FLC cyclist and Durango’s own Keiran Eagen.
FLC will host cyclocross practices through Dec. 12 on the same course at the football stadium. The second, and final, cyclocross race at FLC this year will be held Dec. 1. Registration for the race is available the same day of the race, and there will once again be categories available for kids, masters and open category riders. The cost is $25 for adults, and kids 18-and-under are free.
