DA Murray: Fund justice, safety amid budget cuts

As the District Attorney for the 6th Judicial District, my job is to fight for a safe community every day. One of the harsh realities of my work is the looming budget deficit.

In the coming year, my office will be downsized two positions: an attorney position and victim witness coordinator position. We currently have eight dedicated attorneys working tirelessly in furtherance of safety, fairness and justice.

In contrast, there are more than 40 criminal defense attorneys in the 6th Judicial District working zealously to protect the rights of criminal defendants. The District Attorney’s Office receives the largest share of its funding from La Plata County. Our ability to provide victim services and to fight for justice hinges heavily on the county’s coffers.

I am writing to support La Plata County’s sales tax proposal “1A” on your ballot. This past week, county employees have been keeping the community safe in Vallecito. The response by La Plata County was impressive and will be ongoing as floodwaters recede and recovery starts.

Our partners at the Sheriff’s Office are out on patrol across a wide swath of territory. They are herculean in their capacities as first responders in medical emergencies, in dealing with violence such as domestic disputes, in performing routine traffic stops and even in helping enforce wildlife codes.

All of these efforts add up to something we should all care about: living in a county that is both safe and flourishing. Vote “yes” on 1A.
