Add one more Demon to the Fort Lewis College football 2014 recruiting class.
Daniel Gustavson will join Caleb Lloyd, Isiah Mayberry and Westly Moore on the Skyhawks roster next season after committing to FLC.
“In the end I just decided, I don’t want to leave my family,” said Gustavson, son of Catherine and Dan Gustavson. “I don’t want to go 20 hours away to go to school. I want to go somewhere close and be around my siblings.”
Gustavson’s parents were happy with the decision, as well.
“We’re happy about the academics and excited we’ll still be able to go to his games,” said Catherine Gustavson, Daniel’s mother.
He also considered Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Ore., a Division III team.
Instead he’ll join a his DHS teammates and friends for FLC head coach John L. Smith’s second season.
“It’s going to be good to have some familiar faces up there, some guys that I’m used to playing with,” Gustavson said. “It’s going to make things not as stressful.”
Gustavson said he’ll likely play defensive end for the Skyhawks.
He was named All-Southwestern league First Team in his senior season after racking up 62 total tackles, eight sacks and a forced fumble.
FLC posted its best record since 2006 at 4-7 last season, which helped make Gustavson’s decision even easier.
“They’re building a base, and that’s something I’d love to be involved in,” Gustavson said. “Because eventually they’re going to have a strong group.”
