Daytime delays expected on U.S. 550 and Colorado 145

CDOT work requires heavy equipment

Drivers on Colorado Highway 145 may experience delays between Rico and Telluride through next week as the Colorado Department of Transportation performs routine snow clearing.

Drivers can expect alternating traffic on Colorado 145 south of Telluride and delays of up to 15 minutes as flagging crews guide vehicles through work zones.

From Friday through Dec. 19, crews will remove snow and clear ditches on the mountain pass and along U.S. Highway 550 from Purgatory Resort to Silverton.

CDOT typically doubles fines in active work zones and urges drivers to slow down, proceed with caution and allow extra space between vehicles.

Additional maintenance will require a full overnight closure of 21 miles on U.S. Highway 550 between Ouray and Silverton, starting at midnight Tuesday and reopening at 8 a.m.

CDOT said the closure, from mile markers 71 to 92, is necessary to provide space for heavy equipment while crews clear snow from shoulders and ditches.

CDOT encourages drivers to plan ahead by checking weather forecasts, road conditions and construction impacts. Updated information is available at COtrip.org and on the COtrip Planner mobile app.

Drivers will face maintenance work on U.S. Highway 550 and Colorado Highway 145, with possible delays Dec. 12-19. Check current conditions and closures at COtrip.org. (Google screen shot)
