The world is addressing refugee challenges like one big alcoholic family: ignoring the truth. Already worldwide diaspora tops historic rates. Angst and protectionism won’t work, nor denial. People of the world must face the estimated one billion people migrating within 32 years, escaping drought, famine, flooding, war. In short: climate change. And for the U.S., add escaping violence created in Latin America, direct results of our insatiable drug hungers.
I suggest a Diaspora Accord. The Paris Climate Accord recognizes correctly the responsibility developed nations have to poorer countries to make financial amends for creating climate change. But money won’t buy safe territory.
Developed nations, like alcoholics, must accept data and deal with what our lifestyles create. Stop pointing fingers at “them,” victims of our own actions and look within. Manifest healthful solutions to diaspora. With over nine billion people alive by 2050, where will the dispossessed go? We do this or go down with those we lock out.
