The DeColores Civitan Club of Durango is honoring local clergy during International Clergy Appreciation Week, Feb. 2 through Feb. 8. DeColores Civitan would like to thank clergy of all faiths for their service to our community.
Clergy Appreciation Week is held to recognize the heroism of four U.S. army chaplains during World War II who were aboard the U.S. troopship Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943. When the ship was torpedoed in the North Atlantic, these men of different faiths worked together to evacuate the soldiers, ultimately giving their lives by offering their own life jackets. Each February, Civitans honor them by recognizing the service of clergy members everywhere.
