Delays expected on Red Mountain Pass

Crew installing a drain under the highway
JERRY McBRIDE/Durango Herald

06/18/14- Red Mountain- When Motorists enter the Uncompahgre Gorge on the north side of Red Mountain Pass on U.S. Highway 550 near Ouray, there is danger above with falling rocks and ice and the road narrows with no guardrails or shoulder in places to help keep vehicles from plunging down a 1,000 feet over the side of the roadway.

Drivers can expect delays Friday on Red Mountain Pass as a crew installs a drain under U.S. Highway 550 to prevent further damage caused by snowmelt.

The Colorado Department of Transportation crew will be working on the road Friday to repair damage caused by moisture and freezing temperatures. The crew will also install a drain under the highway to prevent further damage from precipitation.

CDOT expected brief delays just south of the summit, near mile market 79. Motorists should be prepared for stops and one-lane alternating traffic guided by flaggers.

CDOT urges the traveling public to be aware of workers and equipment on the roadway and encourages drivers to slow down. The work is expected to be completed by the end of the day.
