The continuous outrage against Donald Trump is fascinating to watch. A friend of mine who is a nationally prominent psychologist (and a liberal) told me that we’re watching true mass-hysteria. I believe it, although I would note that the reactions toward George W. Bush, in his later tenure, were often equally rabid and hysterical.
The current popular buzz phrase of the left is “Rule of Law,” and it is another gambit aimed at hindering Trump. However, this embrace of the Rule of Law by Democrats is very curious, if you think about it.
The greatest-ever assault on the rule of law was when Joe Biden ignored existing, democratically-enacted immigration laws and allowed around 20 million foreign nationals to invade the United States. The Rule of Law was never mentioned on the left or by the leftist press.
In major cities we have had prosecutors who refused to apply the Rule of Law except selectively. Criminals were set free without any prosecution. Victims were not even mentioned by our leftist free press, particularly if illegal immigrants or minorities were involved. Where was the Rule of Law?
Trump was beset with numerous legal attempts to jail or bankrupt him. The cases were spurious enough that even Democrats like Andrew Cuomo and a legal analyst for CNN admitted that Trump was being unfairly singled out. It was lawfare against Trump, not the “Rule of Law.”
When Democrat protesters illegally hounded U.S. Supreme Court justices and camped around their houses, trying to affect the outcome of pending cases, the Democrat administration refused to apply the law to them. Was that the Rule of Law?
During wholesale rioting by BLM and Antifa mobs a couple of years ago, causing more than $2 billion in damages and resulting in 26 deaths, Democrats were calling for donors to help pay bail. Criminals were released forthwith. There were no calls for the Rule of Law.
In Colorado, the Democrat controlled state Supreme Court attempted illegally to block the people of Colorado from having the choice to vote for Trump as president. There was no cry for Rule of Law, although the U.S. Supreme Court overturned their effort. Our state has gone from a traditional and conservative place to a hotbed of the far left, meaning that our controlling Democrats view the Constitution as a malleable instrument, not a “Rule of Law” document that must be strictly adhered to.
A current poll shows that about one-third of all Democrat voters wish that Trump has been assassinated. Is that the Rule of Law?
Luigi Mangione, the man who murdered the CEO of United Healthcare, is being lavished with adulation by Democrats, with little being said about the “Rule of Law.”
Our Colorado Democratic Party has just passed some laws infringing upon the Second Amendment to the Constitution. The laws are arbitrary and extreme enough that the actual Rule of Law will probably prevail in the Supreme Court, although it will take some time for litigation to get there. Regardless, the Democrats relentlessly do what they can to remove weapons from the ownership of traditional Americans. Again, the “Rule of Law” seems to apply only to select laws.
Democrats tend to have focused trends and the current shibboleth about the “Rule of Law” is just another passing example. If the Rule of Law was so important, why are 20 million foreign nationals in our country spending taxpayer money, overloading our schools and, in many cases, committing crimes that our Democrat newspapers avoid reporting?
Mike Sigman is a retired Coloradan and Independent voter living in Durango who believes our democracy requires people to participate and voice their opinions.
