Demolition of Mason Center set for Monday

Adjacent sidewalk and parking to close during demolition
Demolition of the main building at Mason Center Park will begin Monday.

The city of Durango will begin demolition of the building at Mason Center Park, 301 East 12th St., on Monday. Demolition and site restoration work will tentatively be complete June 4.

The project will remove the existing two wings of the building and parking area and stabilize the site with irrigation and sod. The existing gymnasium structure, tennis courts, playground and park area will remain in place.

“The building has deteriorated and is a public safety hazard,” Parks and Recreation Director Cathy Metz said. “The building site will be restored for park uses.”

The sidewalk and parking along East 12th Street, adjacent to the Mason Center, will be closed for construction access. The park area and parking along East Fourth Avenue and at the Mason Center Park tennis courts will remain open.
