Two members of the Durango High School boys lacrosse team were recently honored for their performances on the field this spring. The team also had five players honored for their academic efforts.

Sophomore goalie Alex Gnehm and junior defender Owen Carozza both earned Second Team All-League honors from the 4A Mountain conference, which includes DHS, league champion Telluride, Fruita Monument, Grand Junction, Crested Butte and Montrose.

Gnehm finished with a .649 save percentage, which was the fifth best in Class 4A and sixth best in the entire state. Gnehm made 235 saves this season in 11 games, allowing just 11.6 goals per game.

Carozza, meanwhile, was a force with his long stick led the team in ground balls with 62 and takeaways with 34 while protecting the team’s goal.

Five team members of the boys lacrosse squad were also recognized for their work academically, led by an All-American performance from Ilias “Leo” Stritikus.

Stritikus, Durango’s senior class president, earned the academic All-American honor from the Executive Committee of the Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Stritikus, his brother Hays Stritikus, Carozza, Zealand Eaton and Jameson Connolly were all recognized with First Team All-State Academic Team honors as well.

DHS went 1-12 overall and 1-9 in the 4A Mountain this spring, but finished the year playing its best lacrosse. The team beat Montrose 12-9 to get into the win column before dropping a one-goal game to Grand Junction in its finale.
