The Durango High School girls cross-country team scored a perfect 15 points on Saturday to win the Boggy Draw Bear Chase in Dolores. The DHS boys also won a team title, but it was a bit closer.
Sofia Voss finished all by herself to win Durango’s season opener in 20 minutes and 44 seconds. The next four finishers were also Demons.
Lacy Ruggiero finished second in 21:34, followed by Mira Quayle (third, 22:25), Ayumi Lambert (fourth, 22:30) and Dewa Ilg (fifth, 22:31).
Brynn Aggeler wasn’t far off, crossing seventh in 23:08 while Ayla Williams placed 10th (24:17) and Aileen McManus 17th (25:07).
San Juan (Utah) finished second in the girls team race with 53 points while Mancos finished third with 76.
Abigail Robertson led the Bayfield contingent, crossing 15th in 24:48. Mila Feely (31st, 29:31) and Kamala Smith (36th, 31:32) also ran for the Wolverines.
Lauren deKay was the top Ignacio Bobcat, placing 29th in 29:23.
Teagan Archer had Mancos’ best performance, finishing 18th in 25:21, while Heather Martinez led Montezuma-Cortez (39th, 32:29).
In the boys race, Charlie Dillman won the individual title for Durango in 17:48, helping the Demons finish first as a team.
Three other Demons also finished in the top-five, including Luke Swenk (third, 18:28), Miles Snow (fourth, 19:01) and Anthony Bonanno (fifth, 19:02). Slader Schweitz finished 12th in 19:52 to round out DHS’ team score while Jack Purcell (13th, 19:56), Brodie Dorko (18th, 20:07) and Marten Mertes-Yeager (32nd 22:12) also ran for Durango.
Ignacio and Bayfield both had a runner finish in the top-10 to lead them.
Bobcat Cayson Burchman placed eighth in 19:31.
Wolverine Tristan Sager finished 10th in 19:43.
Also competing for Ignacio were James Martin (21st, 20:35), Dillon Brann (31st, 22:11), Trace Crane (34th, 22:17), Judah Ashley (35th, 22:20), Phillip Quintana (37th, 22:25), Corey Gomez (39th, 22:41) and Thunder Windy Boy (49th, 24:15).
Porter Sutherlin was the second Wolverine to cross (22nd, 20:03) while Parker Perkerewicz (47th, 24:08), Will Kennedy-Jones (48th, 24:10) and Cameron Mars (53rd, 24:52) rounded out Bayfield’s team score. Ryan Kurtz (56th, 25:43), Sean Zimmerman (63rd, 28:110, Alex Ion (66th, 29:50) and Tristan Bennett (69th, 31:41) also ran for BHS.
Cruz Plewe finished 27th in 21:34 to lead Montezuma-Cortez while Owen Lowe crossed 25th in 21:25 to lead Dolores.
DHS won the boys team title with 25 points, followed by San Juan (44), Ignacio (114), Bayfield (143) Monticello (143), Dolores (152), Rangely (161) and Cortez (180).
Two runners from Durango also won the individual titles in the middle school 3K races: Caden Voss (11:11) and Zia Fadil (12:19).
