A second round at Hiwan Golf Club in Evergreen at the CHSAA Class 4A Boys Golf State Championships afforded the Durango High School Demons room for improvement.
But not enough for the Demons to win the title.
DHS shot a 235 on Tuesday, four shots better than its first-day 239 to finish in fourth place, one spot higher than it ended its first round Monday.
“For our first outing at state as a team on a tough course, I thought these guys represented really well,” DHS head coach Kirk Rawles said.
Trevor Bogus continued to lead the team with a 7-over par 77, which placed him eighth in the tournament.
“It’s an honor to be up there with all those good players,” Bogus said.
Bo Ward shot a 78 to finish tied for 13th, Cory Gillespie an 80 in 23rd and Cameron Barnhardt an 81 in 25th.
Valor Christian overtook Monday’s leader Silver Creek for the team championship, winning by three strokes after trailing by five entering the final day.
Coronado’s Isaac Petersillie won the individual championship by shooting a 74 on Tuesday after an even-par 70 on Monday.
Both Barnhardt and Gillespie will return next season, while Bogus and Ward will graduate.
“We learned we could be really competitive in the future,” said Rawles, who rotated several golfers through his varsity lineup this season. “I think we’ll be in a really good spot.”
