Demons baseball rallies to beat Pagosa

The Durango High School baseball team trailed Pagosa Springs for most of their contest Tuesday at DHS, but the Demons rallied in the fifth and sixth inning to come back and win, 4-2.

Pagosa scored two runs in the top of the first inning and held that 2-0 lead until the Demons came up to bat in the fifth. The Demons then scored twice to tie the game, then plated two more runs the next inning to take the lead and finish on top.

Michael Benner had three of Durango’s five base hits in the game, scoring once and driving in one. Gavin Hamlin scored two runs, and JJ Hoerl scored one.

Tanner Coddington started on the mound, giving up two hits while striking out seven and allowing two runs, none earned.

Hoerl pitched the last two innings, giving up one hit while striking out two to seal the win.

DHS (4-16, 1-5 5A/4A Southwestern) will next host Roaring Fork at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Wolverines tame Mean Moose

The Bayfield girls soccer team traveled to Alamosa on Tuesday and scored a 3-1 win over the Mean Moose. With the league win, BHS improved to 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the 3A Southwest. Alamosa slipped to 7-6, 3-2.

BHS was also scheduled to play Ignacio on Thursday.

Ignacio falls to league leaders

The Ignacio girls soccer team played at 2A Southwest leading Telluride on Tuesday, but got shut out by the Miners, 9-0. The loss dropped Ignacio’s record to 2-11, 2-5 ahead of its showdown with Bayfield.

FLC golfers honored

Fort Lewis College golfers Darren Edwards, Nicholas Krantz and Brooke Sturtevant were recently honored by the conference.

Edwards earned first team accolades while Krantz and Sturtevant both landed on the second team.

Edwards, who was recently named the 2021-22 RMAC Men's Academic Golfer of the Year, currently ranks 66th in the nation and third in the South-Central region. He finished ninth at the RMAC Championship and is currently competing in the NCAA II West/South Central Regional at the Pueblo Country Club.

Krantz has had a breakout year for the Skyhawks and capped it off by with a ninth-place finish at the RMAC Championship.

Sturtevant led the women’s team with a 24th-place finish at the RMAC Championship after going +21 through three rounds. The junior was a consistent presence for the Skyhawks all season, carding reputable scores to guide Fort Lewis to a ninth-place finish in its final outing of the season.

Andrew Ni of CSU Pueblo was named the male Golfer of the Year. Adam Duncan of Colorado Christian was tabbed Freshman of the Year. CSU Pueblo head coach Josh Koschke earned Coach of the Year.

Colorado Christian's Faith Kilgore took home the female Golfer of the Year honor. Cassidy Phelan of Colorado Mesa was Freshman of the Year. Head coach Philip Nelson of Colorado Christian earned Coach of the Year.
