Demons bounced in 4 by Montrose

DHS volleyball loses the weekend to fall to .500 overall

The Durango High School volleyball team had a bumpy weekend – 0-2 on the weekend with a 3-1 loss at Montrose, ranked No. 7 in Class 4A by CHSAAnow.com, on Saturday after a 3-0 loss Friday at Grand Junction.

The Indians won 25-15, 15-25, 25-17, 25-22 to drop Durango to 9-9 overall and 5-4 in the Southwestern League with just Tuesday’s home match with Montezuma-Cortez and next weekend’s Cheyenne Mountain tournament left on the regular-season schedule.

Jessie Brammer led Durango in kills with 10, while Bella Bernazzani added nine. Logan Clark had 25 assists, and Gabi Razma led the Demons with 18 digs to go with 14 from Mikayla Montoya.

Razma said a familiar bugaboo – slow starts – reared its ugly head again for DHS.

“I think in those three games that we lost, we just didn’t start strong enough ... whereas in the second one, we came out with a 5-0, 6-0 lead,” she said.

The senior defensive specialist said the best way to combat sluggish starts simply is by building confidence.

“We’re trying to increase our confidence,” Razma said. “It’s a young team, so we don’t have the experience we’ve had in previous years, so I think we really have to build up confidence so when it’s really important, we can have those strong starts.”
