The goal of winning out slipped away Friday, but one big accomplishment remained alive for the Durango High School boys lacrosse team, and the Demons grabbed it emphatically Saturday.
The Demons finished at .500 or better for the first time in the programs five-year history, finishing the year with a resounding 18-2 victory over Glenwood Springs on Saturday at DHS Stadium.
DHS (7-7, 2-7 Mountain League) capped the season by winning six of its last seven games after a 1-6 start, dropping only Fridays game against Eagle Valley in that span.
Im happy with the progress we made, DHS head coach John Robinette said. We came a long way from the beginning of the year. The big thing was we kept improving every game, and we played first class all the way.
Jared Cook scored five goals for DHS, and Duncan Whitley had three goals and a pair of assists. Liam Millar matched Whitleys output, and Trevor Gabbard had a goal and four assists. Rex Stowers had a goal and three assists, and seniors Cooper Stowers, Max Ponce and Sage Myers scored on Senior Day. Along with Nate Stilwell and Jordan Thompson, the seniors were honored. The majority of our goals, over half of them were assisted. A lot of them came from set plays, Robinette said. DHS also dominated possession, keeping goalies Walker Brown and Robert Moore from having to face too many shots from Glenwood Springs (1-12, 0-8 Mountain League) throughout the contest. We were just dominating on the groundballs and the shots. Really, they probably had about six shots, Robinette said.
Now, the Demons can turn their eyes to next year, when theyll have a wealth of talent returning. And theyll be looking to take the next step in their evolution as a program.
Were definitely optimistic for next year, Robinette said.
