Sometimes in soccer, the team with more chances comes up short.
Friday was one of those days for the Durango High School girls soccer team.
DHS had several opportunities to equalize, but they all went for naught as Grand Junction made a first-half tally stand up for a 1-0 victory, snapping the Demons’ four-game winning streak.
Leah Swander dented the twine for the Tigers (4-7-2, 3-4-1 Southwestern League) with a nice individual effort, getting space enough from between 25 and 30 yards out to rifle a shot under the crossbar.
“(Swander) had a great individual play where she beat one of our defenders and got a great open look on her right foot and about 23 or 30 yards out and was able to just complete it,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said.
Durango (9-4-1, 5-3-1 SWL) peppered the Tigers with shots but simply couldn’t find a way to get one to hit the back of the net.
“We had about 20 shots to their eight,” Parker said. “And we just couldn’t find that piece of the puzzle that we’ve been finding the last six games. We just couldn’t put it away, but we had plenty of chances.”
Durango will have another chance to pick up a win over a Class 5A opponent Saturday, which would help their postseason hopes. DHS will play Fruita Monument at 11 a.m.
