Demons’ devil is in the details

DHS girls basketball plays well in a strange loss at Piedra Vista

Durango High School girls basketball head coach Nancy Smith was worried about Piedra Vista’s size advantage.

“We had some difficult matchups,” Smith said. “They’ve got a lot of size on us, and we’re a smaller team.”

But the Demons had an ace up their sleeve: They got post player Emily McCue back on the hardwood for the first time this season.

Piedra Vista beat Durango 46-34 on Saturday night in Farmington, but the devil was in the details for the Demons.

Durango outrebounded Piedra Vista 33-19, and the Demons limited the Panthers’ damage in the paint.

McCue helped. She had nine points and 11 rebounds.

Augustus Brockus had nine points and seven rebounds.

Katrina Chandler had nine points and three assists.

“The girls really doubled down on defense,” Smith said. “They played really good help-side defense, and they pressed well.”

Piedra Vista, however, shot 50 percent from the floor and made their free throws, which Smith said was the difference in the game.

DHS (2-6), which played without two of its regulars, hopes to be fully healthy when Grand Junction Central and Fruita Monument come to town next weekend for the start of Southwestern League play.

“We played really well, and we played really hard,” Smith said.
