Demons’ double trouble

McCue and Wiegert lead DHS to first-round win at state

Emily McCue and Katie Wiegert weren’t ready for their season to end.

So, they preserved their season with a victory in the first round of the CHSAA Class 4A Girls Basketball State Championships.

The Demons’ duo combined for 39 points to lead No. 9 Durango High School to a 57-40 win over No. 8 Cheyenne Mountain in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday in Colorado Springs.

DHS (10-12) scored the first nine points in the game and kept the Indians off balance with its press.

McCue led the team with 21 points, while Wiegert scored 18.

It was the Demons’ first playoff victory since 2010, when they defeated Loveland in the first round before losing at Chaparral.

DHS will play defending Class 4A state champion Pueblo South at 3:30 p.m. Friday in Pueblo.
