The Durango High School boys basketball team wrapped up a 2-1 weekend at the Pepsi Holiday Invitational Tournament on Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz., beating Flagstaff’s own Northland Prep Academy 61-47.
It was a better offensive output for the Demons (2-2) after scoring just 41 points in Friday’s loss. Nate Atencio led the way with 19 points, while Trent Andrews scored 12. Lucas Baken also had 12 and Isiah Mayberry 10.
“We moved the ball really well,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “The kids were being more aggressive getting in those (defensive) gaps. We just shared the ball really well (Saturday).”
After allowing 29 points in the first half, Durango held Northland Prep to just 18 total in the second half, with six coming via two late 3-pointers after the game was in hand. Batiste said he challenged the Demons at halftime and was pleased with how they responded.
“I said, ‘They don’t score over 50, and we’ve got this game,’” Batiste said. “And the boys told me, ‘40, coach.’ And they had 41 with a minute and a half left.”
Durango will return home to take on regional foe Farmington at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
