A couple of big victories for the Demons couldn’t slow down Delta on the wrestling mat Friday.
The Durango High School wrestling team won three matches but fell 63-14 to the Panthers in Delta.
“Delta’s a tough squad. We wrestled them tough; we were just outmatched (Friday),” DHS head coach John Gurule said.
Devon Pound won by pin at 113 pounds, while Matthew Lavengood won a major decision 13-0 at 120 pounds for Durango. Joe Crawford, meanwhile, scored a 13-4 victory at 145 pounds for the Demons’ third and final victory of the evening.
“(Crawford) apparently beat a kid that he lost to last year,” Gurule said.
The Demons were a bit shorthanded with some eligibility issues, leaving them with forfeits at 182 pounds and heavyweight, but Gurule said he expects to take a full squad to the Warrior Classic in Grand Junction next weekend.
Tristan Martinez (106 pounds), Cole Gustavson (132), Nick Vasquez (138), Henry Dorr (152), Zayne Gillen (170) and Mark Trujillo (220) lost by pinfall.
Hunter Hall dropped a 7-1 decision at 126 pounds in Durango’s other match of the evening.
The Demons will remain in Delta for the Panther Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
