Grand Junction Central made sure the Durango High School softball team’s trip north didn’t end smoothly.
The Warriors swept Saturday’s doubleheader to hand the Demons their fourth consecutive loss to start the season.
Durango took a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before Central scored four runs to send the game into extra innings.
Central won 6-5 in the eighth inning.
“We missed some really routine plays,” first-year DHS head coach Mike Cioppa said.
Demons starter Lexy Vidunas struck out 14 batters in the game, while catcher Mercy Lashway collected four hits and two runs batted in.
The Demons didn’t rebound well in the second game, losing 13-3 after five innings. DHS gave up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth to seal its fate.
Lashway led the offense again with two RBIs, while pitcher Augusta Brockus had two hits.
“Historically our team gets blasted up here, and we played some really close games,” Cioppa said. “We have to learn how to close the deal.”
The Demons will hit the road again for their next game Saturday at Basalt.
