Demons drop No. 1 by pinfall

DHS wrestling scores a trio of pins, but Bloomfield scores four

A handful of pinfall victories provided the bright spots for Durango High School wrestling in what turned out to be a solid night for Broomfield, which claimed a 55-18 home victory over the Demons on Thursday in Durango’s season opener.

Matthew Lavengood scored a pinfall at 120 pounds, and Hunter Hall added one in the third period at 126. Patrick Cunnion claimed a pinfall victory in the first period at 182 pounds for the Demons, as well.

“I didn’t see anybody giving up. They wrestled whistle to whistle,” said first-year DHS head coach John Gurule. “We’ve definitely got some stuff to work on, but I see us getting better match by match.”

Tristan Martinez fell 11-2 at 106 pounds, and Cole Gustavson came up just short in a 5-3 loss at 132. Joe Crawford dropped a 6-2 decision at 145, and Henry Dorr fell 22-5 in a technical fall at 152.

Devin Pound (113 pounds), Nick Vasquez (138), David Ecz (170) and Mark Anthony Trujillo (220) lost by pinfall, and Durango lost by forfeit without wrestlers at 160, 195 and heavyweight.

Despite the loss, Gurule said he enjoyed his first time out as Durango’s coach.

“I had a blast. I had a smile on my face the whole time. Might’ve lost my voice there,” Gurule said.

The Demons will take part in the Maverick Duals on Saturday in Grand Junction.
