Demons go extra for the victory

It went exactly how you draw it up.

The Durango High School girls basketball team executed at the end of the game to force Fruita Monument into overtime, then held on for a 53-47 victory Friday in Fruita.

The Demons trailed by three points with the ball and five seconds remaining.

Fruita Monument (8-12, 4-3 Southwestern League) fouled freshman Katrina Chandler. She made the first free throw, then intentionally missed the second to try and secure a rebound and get one more shot at the tie.

Emily McCue, thank you very much, grabbed the rebound and passed to Katie Wiegert, who was fouled with “basically no time left,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said.

Wiegert made both free throws for DHS to send the game to overtime tied at 43. She finished with 16 points.

Kaitlyn Doughty scored all six of the DHS (5-9, 3-3 SWL) points in overtime to seal the victory. She finished with 11 points in the game.

“It was the most exciting game I’ve seen in a long time,” Smith said. “I’ve always known they were capable of playing with anyone in this league.”

McCue led the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

The Demons scored the first nine points of the game and led 27-19 at halftime.

Fruita Monument eventually clawed back to take a 39-37 lead with 3 minutes, 40 seconds remaining in the game.

“They just slowly worked their way back,” Smith said. “They have a very good inside game, and they’re very good rebounders.”
