A new-look Durango High School girls golf team opened the season in the middle of the pack Monday at the Adobe Creek National Golf Course.
The Demons shot a 305 as a team, which head coach Kirk Rawles estimated would land them about halfway up the 17-team leaderboard.
Montrose shot 245 as a team to take the team title.
Kiseyla Plewe of Dolores High School won the individual medal with a 67.
Riley Waldo fired DHS’ best round of the day with a 91.
“I think it was a good start for Riley, she went to state last year,” Rawles said. “There were a couple blowup holes in that round of 91. It easily could have been in the low 80s.”
Brooke Kniffin joined her in the 90s with a 97.
Courtney Peterson shot a 117, Katrina Chandler a 127 and Taylor Edwards a 130 to round out the Demons’ day.
“We need to get up to speed, get the rust off and get going. It was a good first event,” Rawles said. “We have a pretty young team. Both Taylor and Katrina are freshman. I think it may be the first time they’ve played 18 holes at once. I thought they did a great job for the first time.”
The Demons will stay and play Adobe Creek again Tuesday because it will host their regional tournament later in the season.
DHS next competes March 31 at Brookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction.
