Tied at 46 through three quarters, the Durango Demons hung tough against the sixth-ranked team in Class 4A boys basketball.
But a few jump shots wouldn’t fall for Durango High School in a six-point fourth quarter, and the Mavericks (6-2) went on a run to earn a 62-52 victory in the third-place game of the Pueblo East Coaches Classic in Pueblo.
“We got a pretty close game, but we ended up getting stagnant on offense,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “We were relying on some jump shots that didn’t fall, but they were wide-open shots.”
Lucas Baken led the Demons (2-5) in scoring all three games in Pueblo. The junior had 12 points Saturday, and Scott Morse added 10 points for DHS.
“Morse stepped up big,” Batiste said.
The 52 points were the most in a game this season for the Demons, and it came against a top-10 team.
“The offense was flowing for three quarters. We’re in a good place with it,” Batiste said. “We are where we want to be at the break.”
DHS faced a tough preseason schedule with six tournament games in Parker and Pueblo along with one road game at Farmington High School. The Demons won’t play again until a road game Jan. 6th at Pagosa Springs before a big regional rivalry game against Ignacio on Jan. 8 at Fort Lewis College.
