Demons kick up cloud of dust

Durango football runs for 340 yards in a rout over Central

It wasn’t entirely three yards and a cloud of dust, but at times, it felt that way.

The Durango High School football team ran for 340 yards and rolled to a 46-14 homecoming victory over Grand Junction Central on Friday at DHS Stadium.

Durango, ranked 10th this week in Class 4A by CHSAAnow.com, pounded the ball regularly and threw it efficiently to keep the Warriors (0-7, 0-2 Southwestern League) winless.

The Demons (6-1, 2-0 SWL) got 228 yards and two touchdowns on the ground from David Logan, who’s ran for more than 200 yards in both games he’s played. Lawrence Mayberry chipped in 126 yards and two touchdowns, as well.

“The kids are just confident with their ability to strike people and get off the ball, and we’re going with that. It’s been great,” DHS head coach David Vogt said of his running game.

When the Demons did throw it, they were efficient.

Jeremy Szura, back at quarterback after missing last week’s win over Grand Junction with a shoulder injury, was 4-of-6 for 88 yards and two touchdowns, both to Casey Dunlap, before giving way in the second half to Terrence Trujillo, last week’s replacement starter.

Dunlap made a nice adjustment on a fade route for a 52-yard catch and run for a score and a 20-7 DHS lead in the second quarter, then added a 21-yard touchdown catch before halftime.

“Jeremy made a good read and threw me a back shoulder there, and I just had to make a good play on it,” Dunlap, who had 73 receiving yards, said of his first touchdown reception.

“It helped out a lot. When we have Jeremy, we have our running game and our passing game, so the other team doesn’t know what to expect,” Dunlap said of getting his starting quarterback back.

It was the Durango special teams that opened the scoring, however. Blake Dunlap took a punt 60 yards for the opening touchdown midway through the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.

Special teams set up the next score, as well. A muffed Central punt return led to a 10-yard Logan touchdown run two plays later and a 13-0 lead after a fake kick on a point-after-touchdown attempt went awry.

Wyatt McElwain put Central on the board on the next drive with a 68-yard touchdown pass to Darian Byrd, who finished with 138 yards receiving – but none after halftime.

It was all Durango from then until hafltime. After Casey Dunlap’s two scores, Mayberry scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 2-yard run with 6 seconds to go before halftime.

The Warriors responded after halftime with McElwain’s 10-yard touchdown run after a muffed punt by DHS, one of three Demon turnovers on the night.

It wasn’t Durango’s cleanest game of the season. DHS had three turnovers, missed a field goal and failed to convert on a trio of extra-point attempts. The Demons also had a pair of touchdowns called back because of penalties.

“Penalties will kill you. We just need to make sure that we do clean those up,” Vogt said. “It’s just little mistakes – keeping our hands inside, that kind of stuff.”

The defense, however, managed to keep the Warriors at bay, though McElwain did complete 19-of-33 passes for 226 yards and a touchdown.

But Central only could manage 14 rushing yards in the first half and 86 total for the game, and the Warriors also turned the ball over three times.

“We’re just flying around and doing our job,” Vogt said. “We still made some mistakes. They scored 14 points on us. So, we’ll have to correct some things. But I’m impressed. They’re playing hard.”

The win gave Durango just its third six-win season in the last decade, matching the feat accomplished by the 2009 and 2004 teams.

This Durango squad will try to continue its run on the road against Fruita Monument next Friday before a potentially massive matchup against Class 4A No. 1 Montrose in what could be a battle for the Southwestern League championship.

“We’ve been focusing one week at a time and working hard pretty much all season and all summer,” Casey Dunlap said. “So it just feels good that it’s all paying off.”
