Demons’ O disappears in the Grand Valley

DHS struggles to score and loses its first SWL game in Junction

The Demons’ undefeated Southwestern League start is two and done.

The Durango High School boys basketball team struggled on offense in a 46-27 loss Friday at Grand Junction.

“The score’s kind of deceiving,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “Our offense went away in the second half. They executed off our turnovers.”

DHS (6-5, 2-1 SWL) turned the ball over 10 times in the second half after trailing 21-17 at halftime.

Dane Mestas scored 12 points for the Demons, but no other DHS player could find a consistent rhythm.

“We need to have better spacing when we penetrate the basketball,” Batiste said.

The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for DHS, while Grand Junction (11-2, 3-0 SWL) has won its last five contests.

Durango will play Montrose at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s going to be a big game. The boys are up for it,” Batiste said. “We’ve lost the last two years at the buzzer there. It’s a key game for us.”

Get your DHS tickets at Cortez’s doorstep only

Unlike in years past, there will be no presold tickets for the Durango-Montezuma-Cortez boys and girls archrivalry basketball games Thursday at Montezuma-Cortez High School.

The girls Southwestern League game will be played at 6 p.m.

The boys Southwestern League game will be played at 7:30 p.m.

All tickets will be sold at the front doors of the high school for $5, and the doors to both games will open at 5 p.m. Thursday – 600 tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.

CHSAA and SWL passes will be accepted.

Both schools recommend showing up early because the rivalry games traditionally sell out.
