The Durango softball team trailed Alamosa in both games of their doubleheader on Tuesday, but rallied to win both games, 11-7 and 18-8.

“That’s a true sign of a good team: to be able to come back after starting both games behind,” said DHS head coach John Bernazzani.

In game one, DHS jumped out to a 4-0 lead, but Alamosa responded with five runs in the second inning and added two more in the fifth. Trailing 7-4, DHS scored 7 runs in the bottom of the fifth to pull ahead and win.

Teagan Kehm hit her second home run of the season. She had two RBIs, two hits and scored twice. Carly Piccoli and Mia Baguskas also scored two runs, while Alaysia Kremer drove in 3 and Kelly Arthur went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run.

“I felt pretty good,” Arthur said. “I was excited to hit. It’s something I look forward to. I like testing different ways to adjust to the ball.”

Sydney Flores, meanwhile, struck out seven batters to get the win.

“I definitely felt fatigued, but knew if I pitched strikes it would go well,” Flores said. “I think we underestimated Alamosa. We had a difficult couple of innings, but fought and battled against it.”

In the second game, Alamosa jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. DHS then responded in the second, and a 2-RBI single from Arthur put the Demons up, 4-3.

Alamosa, however, took the lead back in the top of the second, 6-4.

The third inning proved to be the difference. Durango sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs to take control of the game.

Arthur hit a 2-RBI single to put DHS up, 7-6, and later Piccoli and Flores each blasted 2-RBI doubles to extend the lead.

Flores also hit a 2-run home run in the fifth inning. Then, in the sixth, Kehm hit a 2-RBI double to get the walk-off win, 18-8.

Kehm threw 80 strikes and 29 balls to get the win, striking out six along the way.

“At first I was a little nervous and frustrated and hot, but as the game went on, I felt more confidence,” Kehm said.

Flores and Arthur both had 4 RBIs in the win. Piccoli, Kehm, Meah Mordecai and Mia Baguskas all had two.

Kehm and Flores scored four runs apiece while all nine starters scored at least one run. The coach also said Brielle Madrid “came through off the bench today and earned a start in the second game.” He was pleased with the team’s outfielders backing up every play in the infield too.

With the win, DHS is now 8-3 overall. Alamosa slipped to 3-7-1.

“We’re doing better than in past years,” Kehm said. “We’re doing good in practice and good in games. If we work on our weak points, I feel we can be a good, competitive team.”

Next, DHS will host Southwestern League foe Grand Junction on Wednesday at 2 and 4 p.m.
