Demons reach the Super Bowl

YAFL 5th-graders set up undefeated championship game

There were two local teams standing in the Youth American Football League semifinals last weekend.

Only one survived.

The fourth-grade Durango Demons (5-5) lost a hard-fought game 6-0 to the top-seeded Farmington Panthers.

The fifth-grade Durango Demons (7-0) had a little more success against their Farmington counterpart. The Demons beat the Ducks 25-0 in their semifinal to reach a YAFL Super Bowl, and another undefeated football team awaits – the 10-0 Bloomfield Bobcats.

Gage Mestas ran for a 32-yard touchdown to put the Demons on the board in the first quarter, and Jordan Woolverton scored from 15 yards out in the second quarter to give Durango a 12-0 lead at halftime.

Woolverton hit Mestas from 10 yards out for another touchdown, and Mestas ran in the extra point for a 19-0 third-quarter lead.

Haezen Mestas added the Demons’ final points in the fourth with a 4-yard touchdown run.

On defense, Kyler Reimers and Woolverton set the tone in the shutout with eight tackles each in the victory.

The Demons have outscored their opponents 281 to 18 so far this season.

They’ve scored at least 25 points in every game and topped the 40-point mark four times.

Durango hasn’t allowed more than six points in a game so far and has posted four shutouts.

The Demons will play Bloomfield at 3 p.m. Saturday in Farmington for the fifth-grade championship.
