In an already historic boys lacrosse season, the Durango Demons weren’t about to suffer their first varsity loss ever to Telluride.
So, they didn’t.
Despite an inauspicious start that pushed the game from Telluride to Montrose because of snow on the Miners’ pitch, the Demons stepped off the bus about 15 minutes until game time. After a quick warmup, they scored the game’s first three goals, led 4-0 at halftime, “and the game really was never in question,” head coach John Robinette said.
Jared Cook and Trevor Gabbard each scored hat tricks.
Jared Boyle, Wesley Komick and Duncan Whitley also scored, and Cook, Komick and Liam Millar (two) all had assists.
Walker Brown made 12 saves.
Durango (9-4), which extended its historic win total to nine games, three better than its previous best, will try and go one better when it hosts Fruita Monument at 4 p.m. Friday on senior day at Durango High School.
