“Playing Cortez, we just wanted to get hyped. Our energy wasn’t really there, but we got the win, and that’s all that matters,” said DHS junior Katie Wiegert, who scored 11 points in the Demons’ 50-35 victory Tuesday night in Durango.

Confident after a 53-47 win against Fruita Monument last Friday, the Durango High School girls basketball team stretched its winning streak to four games.
Durango (7-9, 5-3 Southwestern League) earned a 50-35 home victory against league rival Montezuma-Cortez (0-14, 0-6 SWL) on Tuesday night at DHS.
“It was a scrappy game but a good game,” DHS head coach Nancy Smith said. “I was proud of our girls. It is so hard to come off back-to-back games on the weekend. You have only one day to prepare, and then you jump right back into it. We did really good.”
The Demons were led by Emily McCue’s 14 points. The senior forward shot 5-of-10 from the field and scored six of her points in the fourth quarter.
“It was pretty exciting, and it is always fun to play in front of our crowd,” McCue said.
Junior guard Katie Wiegert scored another 11 points for Durango on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Wiegert battled foul trouble and had to sit the bench the majority of the second half after quickly picking up her fourth personal foul just 30 seconds into the third quarter.
“Playing Cortez, we just wanted to get hyped. Our energy wasn’t really there, but we got the win, and that’s all that matters,” Wiegert said. “It was nice to get some junior varsity kids experience in the second half. That is great experience.”
Jenny Welbourn added another eight points for the Demons in victory.
Yannibah Bayles led the Panthers with 12 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter.
Montezuma-Cortez battled turnover problems all night, giving the ball away 30 times.
“We wanted to go man against them and not let them beat us,” Wiegert said. “We executed our defense.”
The Demons will finish the regular season with a pair of home games. On Friday, Durango will host Montrose before Grand Junction visits Saturday.
“We are going to look at some of the things Grand Junction and Montrose did against us and make sure we are ready defensively,” Smith said of the previous split.
“We are excited and feel like we can play with people when we are healthy; hopefully, that will be the case this weekend.
