Demons run unlike the wind

Durango track performs well amid ideal conditions at the Aztec Icebreaker

The wind died down.

The temperature dropped.

It was a little chilly for Durango High School track and field coach David McMillan, but he admitted the conditions were ideal for running.

The Demons took advantage of that, taking third on both the boys and girls sides of the Aztec Icebreaker on Friday in Aztec, with 51 and 54 points, respectively.

“Our young athletes, for the first time in a bigger meet, our young athletes did a wonderful job,” McMillan said.

Aztec won the girls meet with 111 points, while Farmington finished first on the boys side with 94 points.

For DHS, Alli Davis won the 400-meter run in 1 minute, 1.6 seconds, and Shannon Maloney came in first in the 800-meter run in 2:18.4 as the Demons swept the top four spots in the 800 – Marley Weaver-Gabel came in second at 2:34.12, Emily Edwards-Colsman third at 2:36.13 and Katarina Seibert fourth at 2:37.26.

Also for DHS, Trent Andrews won the 800 in 2:00.6.

DHS picked up five second-place finishes and six third-place finishes as a team.

Bayfield High School

The Wolverines capped a strong day at the Aztec Icebreaker in fifth place for both the boys and girls meets.

For BHS, John Arnold finished first in the pole vault at 13 feet.

For the BHS girls, Eva-Lou Edwards – the two-time Class 3A state cross country champion – won the 3,200-meter run in 11:48.69, 50 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

The Wolverines totaled three second-place finishes and three third-place finishes in the meet.

The end of basketball season provided a boost for the Bobcats’ track and field team.

IHS finished ninth in the boys meet team standings and 11th in the girls meet after struggling to score in earlier meets.

Klayson Smith won the high jump at 6 feet, 2 inches, while IHS teammate Wyatt Hayes came in fourth in the long jump at 19 feet, 5 inches.

The Bobcats’ girls 4x200 relay team of Jaylynn Herrerra, DaShona Lloyd, Alejandra Lujan and Azala Perez came in fourth at 1:55.89.

IHS also picked up a third-place finish in the 4x200 relay after Wyatt Hayes, Christian Knoll, Mike Perez and Smith turned in a time of 1:39.17.
