The Durango High School girls soccer team found itself trailing Glenwood Springs 1-0 at halftime Thursday. DHS head coach Melissa Halonen said the Demons fell asleep on a corner kick, helping Glenwood get on the scoreboard first.

The Demons, however, responded in the second half, scoring the next three goals and eventually winning 3-2.

“In the second half, we came out super-offensive and pressing,” Halonen said.

Sophie Ragsdale scored on a corner kick to tie the game.

Adde Neiman, who was playing outside back, then assisted Emery Miller to give Durango the lead. Neiman played the ball up to Miller, who dribbled up the back line and “had the composure to finish,” Halonen said.

Miller then gave DHS a two-goal lead. Miller got taken out in the box, resulting in a penalty kick. She capitalized on the PK to put the Demons up 3-1.

In the final minute of the game, Glenwood also got a penalty kick. DHS goalie Jocelyn Feir saved the initial shot, but the rebound bounced free, and Glenwood was able to score on the late opportunity.

“I felt we were in control the majority of the game, and overall, I felt our team stepped up,” Halonen said, noting that the team was missing three key players for the game. “That just shows the depth that we have.”

The coach said lots of players stepped up, including Makayla Wayman, Miller, Ragsdale, Bella Saren, Peyton Cioppa, Ava McClellan and others.

“We had some players step into some big roles, and they really did well for us,” Halonen said.

Durango improved to 11-1 overall with the win. Glenwood slipped to 5-6 with the loss.

UPDATE: The Demons also played Montrose on Friday and scored a 3-1victory over the Indians.
