Katelyn DeLuche swung a big stick in two Durango High School softball wins over Rifle (8-6, 2-2 Western Slope League) on Saturday at Aspen Field.
She drove in five runs on three hits in a 6-4 Game 1 win and added another two hits and two RBIs in a 7-2 victory in the second game.
“She really rose to the occasion,” DHS head coach Mike Cioppa said. “She had struggled earlier in the season, but she’s getting her confidence coming on.”
DeLuche, Cindy Kobrin and Rebekah Ford all hit home runs during the series, giving each of them three for the season, which is a DHS record, according to Cioppa.
The team has nine home runs, which breaks the old record of seven in a season.
The Demons (7-9, 4-9 Southwestern League) trailed 2-0 heading in to the fourth inning of Game 1 but scored one, two and three runs in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to pull out the win.
DHS swept Eagle Valley on Friday at home.
Lexy Vidunas pitched a complete game, while Augusta Brockus added two hits in the victory.
DHS allowed two runs in the top of the first inning in the second game, but the Demons scored the next seven runs to pull out their fourth consecutive win with one game left to play.
Kobrin had three hits, and Vidunas earned her second victory of the day by throwing 77 strikes in 117 pitches.
DHS will close out the regular season against Montezuma-Cortez on Tuesday at Aspen Field.
“We’re starting to get some confidence, making a lot more plays,” Cioppa said. “That only comes with time, and you have to have success.”
